1st Negev
The troop informally known as the “1st Negev”, is composed members of the Australian Light Horse Association who participated in the “Steps of the Light Horse” tour in Turkey and Israel in October/November 2007.
A reunion weekend was held 31st Oct to 2nd Nov 2008 at Emu Gully, near Toowoomba by about 30 of the participants including Gillian & Bob from the 6th Cumberland and Lorraine from the 12th Quirindi. There were 4 other “1st Negev” members at the Murrurundi Beersheba weekend allowing us to catch up with the majority of the group.
Many of the 1st Negev brought along albums of photo’s and scrapbooks from the 2007 trip while others displayed their photos and movies on their laptops. The memories rekindled by the images generated much reminiscing.
Kelvin Crombie, our guide and historian in Israel, had flown to join us and brought us up to date on progress on Shemak and other projects. Kelvin also screened a preview of his new documentary on Israel & its’ formation.
Other activities during the weekend included trail riding on supplied horses, riding in a variety of military vehicles, negotiating a mud course (Kelvin & Bob) and marvelling at the aerobatics of the “Spitfire” built & piloted by Terry.
A full weekend with so many Light Horse Troopers from troops all over Australia allowed for a wide ranging exchange of information on equipment and it’s sourcing, generating new membership and many other topics on the Light Horse.
